Moco
Jumbies
Todays Moco Jumbies (spellings may vary) are male or female dancers
on stilts wearing beautiful costumes. It is believed that the Moco
Jumbie derived from African tradition. Some African tribes believed
in a god named Moco, who towered over villages as a protector who
performed supernatural acts. The West Indian term for spirit or
ghost is “jumbie.” The tradition of Moco continued to
live in the hearts of the African slaves brought to the West Indies,
and so the Moco Jumbie figure lived on in Caribbean Carnivals and
festivities (see article on The Origin of the Caribbean Carnival).

Below is a link to a YouTube video that portrays a very cute song
called “Papa Moco Jumbie.” This animated short debuted
on the children’s network Nickelodeon. Enjoy!
